Shawn began racing snowmobiles in Saskatchewan at 14, over the next couple years this moved to oval snowmobile racing across the Northern US and Saskatchewan. He moved on to motorcross in 1979, and on to race superbikes in the CMA/AMA from 1980-83, which included beating Freddie Spencer (eventual World Champion). Shawn's superbike career was cut short by a broken back in 1983 in Seattle. He was back to motorcross from 1986-89. Shawn found the Saskatoon Sports Car club in 2002, and have been racing autoslaloms since. He began road racing in 2007 with a 1972 Datsun 1200.

Shawn took part in the 2007 Winnipeg sports car club High Performance Driving Experience to gain his WCMA road race license.

In 2007, Shawn raced twice, once at Gimli, and once in Calgary.

Shawn was a major factor in the 2007 SADA (Saskatchewan Association of Automobile Dealers) Autoshow – A charity autocross raised $1200 for Camp Easter Seals, drivers gave ‘ride-alongs’ for $3 donation, every person attending the show(30,000+) spectated at the event.

Shawn races a 1972 Datsun 1200 in the GT5 category. GT allows extensive modifications. Shawn's car is a full tube-frame, with the lightweight body panels held in place by 'dzus' fasteners. The suspension and engine are competely modified for racing.
